| Since May of 1982, the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) has sponsored and organized, in collaboration with other organizations of the region, a biennial meeting that brings together foresters and other government officials, who work in forest and natural resource management at the national level, in the Caribbean region. Each meeting presents case studies, papers, and facilitated discussions that generate a series of conclusions and recommendations related to the meeting's topics. The goal of these efforts is to integrate these recommendations into forest policy, agendas, and actions to support the region's management of forest lands.
Thirteen Caribbean Foresters Meetings (CFM) have been held since 1982. Inspired by Gabriel Charles' vision, CFM was founded to meet four primary objectives:
- To bring together the region’s leaders in forestry and natural resource sectors to better address common problems
- To establish a training program for young foresters
- To develop a system of communication, information collection and data processing for the region
- To share effects of natural disasters on forests and watersheds, as well as their subsequent regeneration.
